Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office Launches Flock Safety Transparency Portal
The Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office has launched a new public Transparency Portal regarding our use of Flock Safety Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology.
The portal is intended to provide the public with a clear understanding of how ALPR technology is used by the Sheriff’s Office, the safeguards surrounding its use, and its impact on public safety.
Through the portal, members of the public can view information including our ALPR data-retention period, system usage statistics, general search categories, camera information, agency-sharing information, policies and safeguards, and examples of cases in which ALPR technology has assisted law enforcement.
The portal also includes a continuously updated Public Search Audit, which provides limited information regarding searches conducted through the Flock Safety system, including the date/time of searches and the general law-enforcement purpose category. Officer identities, license plate information, case numbers, detailed search reasons, and other investigative information are not displayed.
The Sheriff’s Office believes that transparency and accountability are important when utilizing technology that supports law enforcement operations. The portal is another step toward providing the community with meaningful information about how this technology is used while protecting sensitive investigative information and individual privacy.
