Coshocton SWCD will once again be coordinating a Cover Crop Program for our landowners in cooperation with the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District and the Ohio Department of Agriculture. SWCD personnel will assist landowners with application paperwork for this program and the signup deadline is July 8th, 2020. We encourage anyone interested in cover crops to contact us and we will work to make the program meet your goals.
Through this program, the SWCD is able to offer a cost share incentive of $12 per acre with a 200 acre limit per producer. The final number of approved acres in Coshocton County will depend on area wide scores but we encourage anyone interested in the program to work with SWCD technicians to complete the paperwork. A landowner that has never signed up for the cover crop program is eligible for $15 per acre if their ranked fields are approved for the program.
New this year, soil test results must be supplied to SWCD staff for each field signed up to be eligible. Tests must be within the last 4 years and represent no more than 25 acres per test. Fields without soil tests will not be considered for ranking in 2020. Also new on the ranking application is nutrient application records which are worth 20 points. To earn these points, producers must supply the SWCD with current crop records (nutrients applied for the crop currently planted in the field) for each field with date applied, product or analysis, and rate. These changes are an effort by ODA to follow the H2Ohio program, that will hopefully be available in our area in the next couple of years, and SWCD staff will work with you to complete your application.
Contact our office or click the below application if you are interested in this opportunity to establish a cover crop program for your farm. We look forward to working with you to keep our soils healthy and productive while also protecting the water quality in our community.
